David
came to us a few years ago wanting to find an existing UK charity he
could merge with as he was approaching retirement and wanted the Bwiam
project to continue even if he didn’t. He has around 100 sponsors
and with the money raised from their standing orders David pays money
annually to around 100 Bwiam families to help with their schooling costs,
this uses about 50% of the money, the rest he uses to fund different
specific projects.
He
has fenced a large ‘womens garden' and built wells and shelters inside
it. He built a small marketing area in the enclosure at Bwiam where
the schools exist and this is used by the local ladies to sell food for
lunch to the children from all the schools in Bwiam. His project to refurbish the
250 desks at the primary school for children from
7 to 12 has recently finished.
The
next project, at the request of the Village Development Committee ,will be
to install a small agro-industrial unit to mill grain, which will also
provide other services and more jobs. This is one of the many schemes
approved by the United Nations Development Programme to use technology to
provide domestic energy efficiency, local self-sufficiency and employment
whilst improving the diet and nutrition of villagers in Africa. Full
details of this project can be found in the March
2009 Newsletter
