Phonic Workshops
During February 2009 three
sessions of phonic workshops were held at Bakoteh Nursery School one Friday
after school and on the following Saturday and Sunday. These sessions were
attended by teachers from Bakoteh Nursery School, London Corner Nursery School
and St Peter's Nursery School.
A volunteer from the UK
introduced the first three of the Jolly Phonics Big Books to the teachers and
showed how the pictures in these books could be used in the classroom both
to teach phonics and to enrich the children's vocabulary. Copies of these three
books were given to each of the three schools attending.
The schools were also given
a copy each of the Jolly Songs book with CD. These songs use well-known tunes to
practice sounds - the teachers had fun singing along with the CD as they learnt
the songs and were certain that their children would also enjoy learning and
singing these songs.
Some games to help with
revision of the sounds were taught, then work was done on blending three letter
consonant-vowel-consonant words using the sounds taught in the first three
books.
The importance of teaching
correct letter formation from the beginning was stressed and also the need for
the teacher to provide a good example of handwriting with correct letter
formation whenever they write anything on the blackboard or in the children's
books.
Lesson plans were provided
for each teacher to help them with teaching the sounds and also correct letter
formation.
All the teachers felt that
these sessions had been a great help and asked when they would be able to have
more! If there are any more teachers (or ex-teachers) coming out to The Gambia
on holiday who are willing to spend some time training the teachers in the
schools GETSuk supports we would be very pleased to hear from you. Please email Sheila
if you can help our teachers.
